The former head of NATO said that he takes part of the responsibility for the fact that Ukraine received little military support before the start of the big war.
Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said his biggest regret during his tenure was that Ukraine received some weapons before Russia’s full-scale invasion. He spoke about this in an interview with the Financial Times, published on Friday, October 4.
“If there is something that I regret to some extent and see more clearly, it is that we should have given Ukraine more military support earlier. the invasion,” Stoltenberg said.
Norway’s former prime minister, who led NATO from 2014 to 2024, said that before Russia’s full-scale invasion in early 2022, the shipment of lethal weapons to Ukraine “caused a huge debate.”
“Most of the Allies were against this before the invasion… they were very afraid of the consequences. I’m proud of what we did, but it would have been much better if we had started earlier. Perhaps it would have prevented . the invasion, or at least make it more difficult for Russia to attack,” he said, adding that he bears part of the responsibility.
Also in the interview, Stoltenberg commented on Russia’s “red lines”, noting that many such “lines” were crossed, but Putin “did nothing.”
