At least 177 Ukrainian prisoners of war have died in Russian captivity since February 24, 2022.
However, due to the lack of international monitoring, the actual number of deaths in Russian prison facilities is likely to be significantly higher. Victoria Tsymbalyuk, a representative of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, told Politico about this.
This is the number we have. But, of course, not all the bodies were returned, and Russia did not even confirm that many were in captivity, the official noted.
The publication also told the story of the captivity of a 23-year-old international affairs student from Lvov, Daniil, who became a UAV operator during the war. The occupiers held this prisoner of war for 175 days. Ukraine returned him home in April 2023.
Kravets said that torture and beatings were widespread in the four prisons where he was held. One day, the captors told him to choose between losing a finger or a leg and subjected him to a mock execution.
And upon arrival at the place of detention in Donetsk, Daniil and other prisoners were ordered to undress. And then he spoke briefly about sexual assault.
Let us recall that on October 2, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) unanimously supported the resolution on missing persons, prisoners of war and civilians held captive in the Russian Federation.
