Ukraine is seeking international permission to use Western weapons against military targets on Russian territory.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock spoke in favor of giving Ukraine the right to use Western weapons to strike Russian territory. He emphasized that Ukrainian forces must be able to attack deep behind enemy lines, especially to defend against new Russian offensives. Deutsche Welle reported this on Sunday, September 29.
“I’ve always noticed that long-range weapons play an important role, especially for the destruction of mines,” Burbock said.
However, he said, the issue of providing additional weapons remains a topic of discussion with the German government. Baerbock admitted that on this issue his opinion did not coincide with the position of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
“The coalition has not reached a consensus on future arms supplies to Ukraine,” he said.
It should be noted that the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky has been asking for permission to use Western weapons for strikes deep into Russian territory for a long time. Some NATO countries supported the idea of allowing strikes on Russian military targets. Poland, in particular, advocates for Ukraine’s right to self-defense, including the possibility of attacking Russian military targets.
Let’s remember that the European Parliament called on the member countries of the European Union to remove restrictions on the use of Western weapons for Ukraine to hit targets on Russian territory. This was stated in the resolution adopted at the EP meeting in Strasbourg. The document also notes that insufficient supplies of ammunition and weapons and restrictions on their use could undermine the efforts.
