The German opposition leader called for everything to be done so that Russia considers the continuation of the war with the use of military force as hopeless.
The leader of the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, the largest opposition force in the Bundestag, Friedrich Merz emphasized that Ukraine’s allies currently do not intend to defeat the Russian Federation. He was recently nominated as a candidate for chancellor in the fall 2025 election. He said this in an interview with BILD.
“Unfortunately, we cannot turn back time. If we take stock now, in 2.5 years [войны]they look scary. I spoke about this recently in the Bundestag. We act too late and too little. I am of the opinion, and the Chancellor said this in a government statement three days after the war started, that in fact we are now helping Ukraine – he did not say this – not to win this war, but not to lose, No Ukraine will ever be able to defeat Russia, that is not the goal. But for me, victory means: it must renew its territorial sovereignty. And Russia must stop attacking this country. We must do everything to make Russia consider it hopeless to continue the war with the use of military force. And we are quite far from it,” explained Merz.
Remember that earlier Friedrich Merz spoke in favor of increasing support for Ukraine from Germany, especially for the supply of combat aircraft.
