An American senator was tricked using deepfake technology by calling him on behalf of former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
The New York Times writes that Benjamin Cardin’s (Democratic Party) interlocutor sounded and looked like the former head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, but the senator became suspicious when he “began to behave uncharacteristically.”
“Kuleba” asked “politically motivated questions in connection with the upcoming elections” and solicited opinions on “sensitive foreign policy issues,” such as whether the senator supported long-range strikes on Russian territory.
The senator ended the call and notified the State Department, which confirmed it was not Kuleba. Senate security alerted other lawmakers to the syphilis threat.
The New York Times points out that this renews concerns that American lawmakers could be targets of malicious actors seeking to influence US policy or obtain confidential information.
