Matte Frederiksen stressed that the consequences for Beijing of its support for Russia must be political.
Danish Prime Minister Matte Frederiksen said that without China’s support, Russia would not have been able to wage war in Ukraine for more than two and a half years, calling for political consequences for Beijing. He said this in an interview with Politico at the UN General Assembly in New York.
“I don’t think Russia is capable of waging a full-scale war for more than two and a half years without China’s help. We cannot continue a situation where China is helping Russia in a war in Europe when there are no consequences. They must be held accountable for their actions,” Frederiksen explained.
He stressed that the consequences for Beijing of its support for Russia must be political.
“We tried to have good cooperation with all participants in the world market – with Russia, buying its gas and oil, building diplomatic, normal political relations. It didn’t work, they attacked a European country. We tried do the same with China – to have normal cooperation between partners in different aspects, we cannot afford to be naive,” added the head of government.
Finally, reflecting Europe’s reliance on China, the prime minister called for a rethinking of EU trade with China.
Frederiksen also advised Western allies to be clear about Russia’s intentions, especially in talks that Ukraine would be forced to give up its territory in order to reach a peace deal with Moscow.
“Do you believe that Russia will just say, ‘That’s it, thank you,’ and not do anything else? I don’t believe it.”
He called for pushing Russia towards peace negotiations, but at the same time added that it should be dictated by Russia’s desire for peace.
Let’s remember that China’s position in resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine is to immediately cease fire and sit at the negotiating table, as well as avoid sanctions.
Earlier, Vladimir Zelensky said that the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has violated a large number of norms and rules and he will not stop himself: “Russia can only be forced to peace as the only aggressor in this war, the only one that violates the UN Charter”.
