Guterres specifically emphasized that the level of impunity in the world is “politically unjustifiable and unacceptable from a moral point of view.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the international community to confront the three main threats to humanity: impunity, inequality and uncertainty. It was reported by Ukrinform from New York.
“Three main factors of instability must be confronted. Global impunity, where violations and abuses threaten the very foundations of international law and the UN Charter. Global inequalities, where Injustice and discontent threaten to weaken the position of countries or even push them to the brink. And global uncertainties, where uncontrollable risks threaten our future in the unfathomable those ways,” he said.
As the UN Secretary General emphasized, the level of impunity in the world is “politically unjustifiable and morally unacceptable.”
According to him, many governments and individuals act as if they have the right to “freedom from prison”, ignoring international law and the UN Charter.
“They can attack other countries, destroy entire societies or completely ignore the welfare of their own people – and nothing will happen,” Guterres said.
He is especially focused on the Russian war against Ukraine. According to the Secretary General, civilians bear the brunt of this confrontation.
Guterres also addressed the situation in Gaza and Lebanon, citing the need to stop the violence.
In addition, the Secretary General in his speech touched on the conflicts in Sudan, Myanmar, Congo, Haiti and Yemen, emphasizing the importance of fighting gender inequality, particularly in Afghanistan. It is noteworthy that women make up less than 10% of the speakers in the current General Assembly debates.
Regarding uncertainty, Guterres emphasized that it is exacerbated by two global threats: the climate crisis and the rapid development of technology, especially artificial intelligence.
Let’s recall that Guterres previously said that the agreement on a “comprehensive strategic partnership” between Russia and the DPRK, which provides military assistance in the event of an attack on one of the signatories, contradicts international agreements.
He also emphasized that Russia’s attack on a ship carrying wheat from Ukraine is another risk for the economy.
