Ugledar is of great strategic importance, it is located on a hill and at the junction of two fronts – the East in the Donetsk region and the South in the Zaporozhye region.
There is a new problem area ahead with analysts calling the situation around Ugledar in the Donetsk region critical. The Russian army is trying to surround the city and at the same time destroy the populated area with artillery and CAB, the analysts of the DeepState project reported on September 24. The defense against the Russian troops in Ugledar is held by the soldiers of th -72 separate mechanized brigades named Black Cossacks.
Defense problems
DeepState said that while “political discussions on restrictions and permits continue,” the occupiers are “simply destroying entire cities and villages with aerial bombs from planes that should be destroyed, but aren’t.”
The head of the Center for Combating Disinformation (CPD), Andrei Kovalenko, noted that thanks to the use of KABs and aviation of the Russian Army, the Ukrainian troops defending Ugledar were able to advance to the flank.
“Ugledar. In the past, this city was convenient to defend it was at its best. But with the active arrival of KABs to the front, the enemy was able to destroy it and move to the flank. Unfortunately, the CAB and aviation are the only things that allow the enemy’s infantry to move,” he wrote.
The 72nd brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which has been defending Ugledar for two years, is exhausted and in danger of being encircled, and there is no help or replacement for it, Forbes analyst David Ax said.
“The armed forces of Ukraine are simultaneously attacking Kursk and defending in the east and south. They are very stretched. And the 14 new brigades that make up the army are experiencing a severe lack of modern equipment,” the expert wrote .
Strategic importance
Ugledar is of great strategic importance. It is located on a hill and at the junction of two fronts – Eastern in the Donetsk region and Southern in Zaporozhye.
18 km east of the city there are railway tracks where the Russian army can move troops and equipment to the Donetsk-Volnovakha line and further south.
However, as long as Ugledar remains under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, their cannon artillery is capable of delivering targeted attacks on this important highway.
Russian troops have been trying to capture Ugledar since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine.
In the fall of 2022, they managed to capture the village of Pavlovka located in the south, but all subsequent attempts to attack the city ended in failure. From February 2023 to June 2024, the Russian army conducted at least four major offensive operations there – without success and with heavy losses.
But now the slow advance of Russian troops in other directions in Donbass is starting to take its toll, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces are struggling to defend their expanding flanks.
After the fall of Novomikhailovka in April, Russian units began to overtake Ugledar from the northeast. Sensing success, they also increased the pressure from the south and southwest.
“The refusal to rotate the 72nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade forced the leadership to introduce auxiliary reserves of TRO forces, which could not withstand the enemy’s onslaught,” DeepState said. — As luck would have it, the defense of the 58th Mechanized Infantry Brigade in Prechistovo also collapsed earlier. Due to the unplanned retreat to “better lines”, the enemy surrounded the right flank of the Ugledar group.
