The duration of school education will increase from 11 to 12 years.
Education Minister Oksen Lesnoy said that from 2025, it is planned to introduce a three-year specialized secondary education for schoolchildren after the ninth grade. Thus, the duration of schooling will increase by one year. The project should be fully operational from 2027.
According to the minister, students will need to make a conscious decision: to transfer to an academic lyceum or a vocational college, in accordance with their interests and abilities.
This will allow those of them who decide to pursue higher education to come to university better prepared.
In fact, the reform is designed so that you come to university better prepared. We are currently working with our team at the Directorate of Higher Education and in some areas we are planning to reduce the number of bachelor’s degrees.
We will announce separately when we come to this decision, but you will enter the university better prepared. And also, if you have chosen a vocational college, you will enter the labor market already with a profession. Therefore, plus one year and, accordingly, the choice of profiles in which you work,” Lesnoy said at the presentation of the study of the reform of the senior school.
In addition, according to Lesnoy, there are plans to reduce the number of bachelor’s degrees. The timeframe for implementing this project is still unknown.
Currently, Ukraine’s employment rate for university graduates is at the level of Ethiopia in 2021 – only 58%. While in other European countries this figure is approaching 90%.
