Once completed, the 1,240-kilometer cable, which will run at a depth of 3,000 kilometers, will be the longest and deepest in the world.
The energy ministries of Greece and Cyprus have entered into a memorandum of understanding regarding the construction of the Greater Sea Interconnector (GSI), an undersea electrical cable connecting continental Europe to the Eastern Mediterranean, Reuters reports.
The Great Marine Interconnector, a €1.9 billion project, will connect Europe’s electricity grid to Cyprus and eventually extend to Israel.
Once completed, the 1,240-kilometer cable, which will run at a depth of 3,000 kilometers, will be the longest and deepest in the world.
“This project is of strategic importance for Cyprus, Greece and the EU as it will connect Cyprus to the European electricity grid, contributing to its energy transition and Greece’s goal of becoming a clean energy conduit,” said of both sides.
Approval of the project was delayed after disputes between Greek and Cypriot energy regulators over the allocation of costs and risks.
We remind you that there are plans to build a large naval base on the southern coast of Cyprus.
