American officials expect further escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Hezbollah group operating in southern Lebanon, possibly leading to a full-scale war between them, Politico reported, citing several American officials.
Two Politico sources cited an internal assessment from the Joe Biden administration that de-escalation would be difficult for Israel and Hezbollah, especially after the latest Israeli attacks.
Israel has told the US it intends to pressure Hezbollah with military action to force it to agree to a diplomatic solution that would allow Israelis to return to their homes in the north.
A US official told Politico that he expects possible continued attacks on Lebanon, particularly Beirut, and some form of retaliation by Hezbollah against Israel – possibly in the form of drone attacks.
The fighting is also expected to include targeted assassinations of Hezbollah commanders, strikes on its weapons depots and subsequent targeted strikes on communications infrastructure, Politico’s third source added.
At the same time, the White House is still unsure how exactly the escalation between the parties will develop.
Let’s remember that the latest increase was caused by the explosions of pagers and other means of communication used by Hezbollah on September 17 and 18. As a result, at least 37 people died and almost three thousand were injured.
