German Chancellor Olaf Scholz once again stated that there are no plans to supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.
Despite pressure from many, I will not deliver cruise missiles that can reach Moscow, he said at a meeting with citizens in Niedergersdorf. I can and want to assure you: I will remain unwavering in this position, he emphasized.
At the meeting, which is taking place on the eve of the state elections in Brandenburg, Scholz noted the need to explore possibilities for establishing peace.
The Chancellor also criticized the position of the Sahra Wagenknecht Union (BSW) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, saying that he did not agree with their assertion that peace talks could be an alternative to supporting Ukraine.
“That’s naive,” Scholz said.
Germany continues to provide Ukraine with significant military and financial assistance, including tanks, air defense systems, and other equipment. However, on the Taurus missiles, Scholz and his team are still choosing a balanced strategy, taking into account all the risks and possible consequences. Most likely, Germany will wait for new consultations with NATO partners before making a final decision.
But Scholz and parts of the German government fear that handing over the long-range missile could further escalate the conflict with Russia. The main concern is that Ukraine could use the Taurus to strike Russian territory, which Germany believes could provoke a tougher response from Moscow.
Olaf Scholz continues to face significant domestic and international pressure to step up military support for Ukraine. Some German politicians, as well as international partners such as Poland or the Baltic states, are demanding decisive action. Many believe that the transfer of a missile such as the Taurus will help Ukraine reduce Russia’s military presence in the occupied territories and strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
