The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), also known as the operator of the Large Hadron Collider, will deny hundreds of Russian scientists access to its facilities from December this year. As reported by Nature magazine, this decision is related to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
It was noted that from December 1, scientists associated with Russian institutions will no longer be able to visit CERN and must surrender their French and Swiss residence permits. To continue working in the organization’s laboratories, they will have to cut off cooperation with Russian institutions and move to foreign scientific institutions.
At the same time, CERN will maintain ongoing projects involving approximately 270 employees of the Russian Joint Institute for Nuclear Research working on experiments at the NICA collider in Dubna.
In February 2024, CERN representative Arnaud Marsollier announced that more than 500 scientists from Russian institutions would be suspended from working at the organization. Among the scientific institutions collaborating with CERN are the Kurchatov Institute, Moscow State University, MEPhI, St. Petersburg State University, Tomsk State University and the Novosibirsk Institute of Nuclear Physics. A total of 1100 specialists. The decision to end cooperation with Russian scientists was made by CERN in November 2022 in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Then the Russian scientists were given two years to finish the projects they started.
