Christian Democratic Union leader Friedrich Merz will be the opposition CDU/CSU bloc’s candidate for chancellor.
As BILD has learned, CSU leader Markus Söder has agreed not to stand as a candidate for chancellor in the upcoming federal elections in September 2025. Söder arrived in Berlin the previous evening, where he held talks with CDU leader Friedrich Merz.
Merz and Söder are set to announce their decision together at a press conference today. According to BILD, it will be officially announced that Merz will lead the CDU/CSU in the 2025 federal election campaign.
In the last parliamentary elections in 2021, Söder, who also headed the CSU at the time, criticized the CDU candidate Armin Laschet, who beat him to become the chancellor candidate. This situation should not happen again now, because the politicians of the opposition bloc were able to agree among themselves in advance.
