The EU should increase its capacity to patrol the airspace over Poland, allowing Warsaw to move its aging planes to Kyiv.
Ukraine needs Polish MiG-29 aircraft, but their transfer requires the help of partners in the matter of air patrols in Poland. This was said on Saturday, September 14, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiga at the Yalta European Strategy Forum.
“We have a clear understanding of what our partners have, and what solutions are needed for it, I am glad that Radik Sikorsky is here with us, it is necessary to increase the capabilities, in specifically, of the EU, to patrol the airspace over Poland,” said Sibiga.
He also noted the importance of supporting Ukraine in the energy sector on the eve of the “difficult winter.” “Decisions to be made now will help us reduce possible risks,” said Sibiga.
Separately, he emphasized that Ukraine expects important decisions during the Polish presidency of the EU from January 1, 2025.
“We really hope that our partners follow the logic of opening negotiation clusters in parallel, and not in parallel as we certainly rely on the support of our allies in the EU,” added the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Before this, Radoslaw Sikorski said at a press conference that Poland is considering the possibility of transferring the MiG-29 aircraft. According to him, if “the allies help us with the air patrol mission in Poland, that will make it possible to implement the transfer step.”
Let’s recall that in August Poland said that they could transfer their MiG-29s to Ukraine, as requested by President Vladimir Zelensky, only after they have a more modern replacement.
Earlier, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Poland would allocate 100 million euros to the Czech initiative to buy ammunition for the Ukrainian army.
