The policies of many EU countries harm Ukraine’s defense capability and economic stability.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski is proposing that European countries remove social payments to Ukrainian men of mobilization age in Europe to encourage them to serve in their country’s army. He made a corresponding statement on Saturday, September 14, at the Yalta European Strategy forum.
He noted that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees have been living in European countries since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Some of them are men who fled Ukraine illegally to avoid mobilization. In Europe they receive a lot of help from governments.
Sikorsky noted that the current policies of many EU countries harm Ukraine’s defense capability and economic stability.
To encourage the men to return to Ukraine, Sikorsky proposed removing social benefits for Ukrainian men in Europe.
“Here is a practical idea that will help finance Western Europe, help traditional political parties against the radical right and help Ukraine,” Sikorsky said.
He added that receiving financial aid in exchange for “not conscription is not a human right.” For his part, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga said he supports this idea.
It was previously reported that almost a quarter of a million Ukrainians lost their temporary protection in Germany, as they received another protection status or permanently left German territory.
Payments for Ukrainian refugees will be drastically reduced in Ireland
