Since Russia launched its all-out invasion of Ukraine, there has been widespread GPS loss along the Gulf of Finland and Eastern Finland.
In the Gulf of Finland, there have been problems with GPS and GNSS on ships, so they are advised to use a map and not neglect traditional methods of navigation. This was reported by Yle on Tuesday, September 10.
The Finnish Coast Guard reported that satellite positioning violations were observed with particular frequency in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, near Kotka and Helsinki.
All operating ships are urged to stock a nautical chart and ensure that navigation is possible using traditional methods.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, there have been widespread GPS outages along the Gulf of Finland and Eastern Finland.
In particular, commercial air traffic has recently been disrupted due to interference.
The former commander of the Finnish Defense Forces, member of parliament Jarmo Lindberg previously stated that Russia has been jamming GPS in the region to prevent Ukrainian attacks on strategic targets in the Russian Federation.
“Russia uses jamming to protect, for example, bases, warehouses, oil tanks. At the same time, they create problems for commercial regular traffic, but this does not bother them at all,” suggested Lindbergh.
It was previously reported that European companies’ flights were suffering from GPS interference from Russia. GPS jammers transmit false data that disrupts critical satellite navigation signals that airliner systems rely on.
False transmissions can include false altitude and location information, triggering warnings aimed at preventing airliners from crashing into mountains or descending below a safe altitude in hilly or urban areas.
Subsequently, the UN member International Telecommunication Union (ITU) expressed serious concern about the use of signals to cause intentional harmful interference.
