Ukraine has asked its allies to allow the use of Western weapons against military targets inside Russian territory.
The Netherlands allowed Ukraine to use its weapons behind Russia’s back. This was announced on Monday, September 9, by the country’s Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans, wrote Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
According to him, Ukraine has the right to use Dutch weapons for protection in accordance with international law. He also called on other states to lift restrictions.
“Ukraine has the right to defend itself and if the country is attacked from border areas or from Russian airfields, then it can target military targets.” said Brekelmans. .
He added that “international law is not limited by distance.”
“We have not imposed any restrictions on the distance of operation in Ukraine,” he said.
According to him, the permission to strike Russia is also directly related to the F-16 fighters, which the Netherlands will transfer to Ukraine.
“Of course, we explain our position and urge others to lift deployment restrictions. Russian attacks are becoming more and more brutal,” he said.
The Breukelmans expressed confidence that Europe would continue to support Ukraine, as Ukraine’s defeat would mean a greater threat to Europe and NATO, leading to greater investment in the continent’s security.
Earlier, Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said that the possibility of partner countries shooting down Russian missiles and drones in Ukraine has more risks than benefits.
