Creating this kind of fear is the main effect of the Ukrainian thermite drones, says defense industry analyst and former British Army officer Nicholas Drummond.

“It is a very disgusting thing. Using a drone to drop it is quite innovative but if used in this way, its effect is more psychological than physical,” commented the specialist.

“Ukraine has limited capabilities to create a thermite effect, so this is an opportunity, not a new major weapon,” he said, adding that he recognized the horror thermite caused to the invaders.

According to Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), a British anti-war advocacy group, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have previously used drone-dropped thermite to permanently disable Russian tanks.

Thermite is dropped “directly through the hatches, where the intense heat quickly ignites and destroys everything inside,” the AOAV report said.

“This precision, combined with the drone’s ability to bypass traditional defenses, makes thermite bombs a very effective tool in modern warfare,” the report said.

The publication recalled that the Ukrainian military previously accused the Russians of using incendiary ammunition in the attacks on Bakhmut in 2023. However, the use of ammunition did not lead to a quick victory for the invaders, and , according to Drummond, they do not change the course of the battle for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. But incendiary munitions give occupiers another reason to fear Ukrainian drones, he said.

“We saw cases where Russian troops, attacked by several drones, abandoned their positions. The more Ukraine can instill fear of drones, the higher the chances of success,” shared the former his opinion is military.
