The left-wing bloc accused Macron of “rejecting democracy and stealing elections” after he failed to back the leading candidate in July’s vote.
Tens of thousands of people in various French cities protested after the appointment of center-right Michel Barnier as the country’s prime minister. Reuters reported this on Saturday, September 7.
The left-wing bloc, led by the far-left French Invictus party (LFI), accused French President Emmanuel Macron of rejecting democracy and stealing the election after he refused to support the candidate of the New Popular Front (NFP) alliance, which won was the top vote-getter in July.
In response to Barnier’s appointment, leaders of left parties, trade unions and student organizations on Saturday called for mass protests ahead of further demonstrations, including possible strikes on October 1. Said of the LFI party that there will be 130 protests across the country.
Protest organizers said around 300,000 people demonstrated peacefully across France on Saturday, including 160,000 in Paris. At the same time, the police said that only 26 thousand people protested in the city.
Let’s remember that on September 5, Macron appointed Michel Barnier as Prime Minister and instructed him to form a new government.
On the same day, Barnier made his first speech, in which he promised to present legislative initiatives and proposals of the new government to parliament within a few days.
