A Royal Navy Merlin Mk4 helicopter has crashed in the English Channel off the coast of Dorset in southwest Britain. The plane crash occurred on Wednesday, September 4, during a night flight exercise. The Independent reported this on Thursday, September 5, citing a statement from the British Ministry of Defense.
There are three crew members on board the helicopter. Two were rescued and taken to hospital without serious injuries. The third pilot died.
“A Royal Navy pilot has died after a Merlin helicopter crashed into the English Channel during a night training flight on the Queen Elizabeth,” the navy said in a statement.
It is noted that the Merlin Mk4 helicopter has recently been modernized and has some modifications for use by the Royal Marines. The last recorded accident of such a helicopter occurred in 2010 in Afghanistan.
