The ASML machine obtained by Russia dates back to the late 1990s, but is still modern enough for chip production.
Russia has at least one Dutch machine for making chips used in UAVs, tanks and missiles. The Dutch News reported it.
Russia has at least one old chip-making machine made by Dutch manufacturer ASML to produce chips used in drones, tanks and missiles, a Trouw investigation has found.
Chips are still being sought in Russia despite the sanctions, but the newspaper found that the chips found in Russian UAVs shot down in Ukraine were likely made on an ASML machine.
The engine purchased by Russia dates back to the late 1990s, and no spare parts have been supplied since sanctions were imposed on Russia in 2022, according to ASML.
Experts say the machine is modern enough to make chips for weapons. But about 170 spare parts for the engine entered the country through trade networks, in which Chinese traders played an important role.
Exports of ASML chip technology to China will be strictly controlled from September 2023 under new regulations imposed for safety reasons.
As already written, despite the sanctions, since the beginning of a large-scale war, Russia has increased its imports of nitrocellulose, the main component of gunpowder and military explosives, by an order of magnitude. The main suppliers are Turkish and Chinese companies.
