Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholzcharacterized this Thursday in Madrid as the “ridiculous” accusation of imperialism leveled against NATO by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Honestly, it’s funny. NATO it is a defensive alliance. He poses no threat to anyone,” Scholz said at a press conference following a summit held by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the Spanish capital.
“It is rather Putin who makes imperialism his political goal” when he says that Russia’s “neighboring countries” “are part of it,” deepened the head of the German government.
“This is imperialism, and there is no other way to call it,” Scholz said.
Putin on NATO
Putin said during a visit to Turkmenistan that “the countries that lead NATO want … to assert their hegemony, their imperial ambitions.”
Although Putin said he had “no problem” with Sweden and Finland joining the Atlantic Alliance, he warned: “If we deploy troops and military infrastructure there, we will be forced to respond symmetrically.”
Asked about Putin’s words, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at the closing press conference of the summit that the alliance was “ready for all possibilities.”
“We are ready to defend all allies and, of course, Finland and Sweden,” he stressed.
