Even in an optimistic scenario, the outages will be long – up to 12 hours a day. Pessimistic scenarios are even worse.
During the autumn-winter season in Ukraine, according to the optimistic scenario, power outages are possible for up to 12 hours a day, and according to the pessimistic scenario, up to 20 hours. It was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation.
Yuri Korolchuk, an expert at the Institute of Energy Strategies, considers several possible scenarios for the development of the situation in the energy sector during the autumn-winter period, depending on the course of events.
The optimistic scenario assumes that 8-9 nuclear power units will work stably, and the winter will be mild, without severe frosts. In this case, about 3 GW (3,000 megawatts) of the 6 GW of damaged capacity could be restored, resulting in power outages of up to 12 hours per day.
The pessimistic scenario assumes the restoration of about 2,000 megawatts of power during the operation of 6-7 nuclear power units and a cold winter. In this case, the energy system may face a crisis.
In the worst case scenario, if Russia continues its attacks on the Ukrainian energy sector, citizens will have to spend up to 20 hours a day without electricity and heating.
According to the forecast of Sergei Nagornyak, a member of the Verkhovna Rada Energy Committee, at a temperature of -10°C in winter, Ukrainians will likely have access to electricity only 12-14 hours a day, the remaining 10 hours must be without electricity.
The Center also emphasized that it has high hopes for Western aid. During an official visit to the United States, the Ukrainian delegation agreed with American government officials and businesses on a strategy for the rapid restoration and modernization of the Ukrainian energy system. In particular, the United States provided Ukraine with an aid package worth $800 million to strengthen energy security.
We remind you that Ukrenergo will significantly reduce the number of outages on Thursday: the lights will be turned off one by one.
