A dragon drone or a flying flamethrower. This is how they have already dubbed the new UAV that appeared in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Probably, a warhead with a thermite mixture was used, which when burning can have a temperature of several thousand degrees Celsius.
The Ukrainian army has demonstrated for the first time the operation of a drone that scatters incendiary munitions over the enemy at close range.
A video published on Telegram by the 108th separate territorial defense brigade of Ukraine shows the combat use of an FPV drone, which does not drop grenades or fly towards a target with an explosive charge, but scatters thermite over the positions of Russian military personnel – a mixture of iron oxide granules that burn.
According to BILD, the Ukrainian military began thinking about how to use the thermite mixture with drones at the end of last year. As a result, they came to the conclusion that about 500 g of the thermite mixture can be placed under a standard FPV drone. The chemical reaction is triggered by remote control only shortly before appearing in the target area.
In the video, the fiery rain over Russian positions lasts for about 20 seconds, causing a forest belt about 100 meters long to catch fire. Just a few seconds after the thermite mixture is used, explosions can be seen on the ground. This is a sign that the fire has spread to Russian ammunition.
The combustion temperature of thermite is approximately 2500 degrees – this means that the hot mixture corrodes even iron in a matter of seconds, and mortars, grenades and cartridges become deadly for their owners.
