Gonzalez accused Attorney General Tarek William Saab, a longtime Maduro ally, of being a “political prosecutor” who “condemns prematurely.”
A Venezuelan court has issued an arrest warrant for former opposition presidential candidate Edmund Gonzalez as part of a criminal investigation into the results of the disputed July election. The Associated Press wrote this on Monday, September 2.
The warrant was issued at the request of prosecutors accusing former diplomat Gonzalez of multiple crimes, including conspiracy, falsification of documents and usurpation of authority.
Prosecutors’ court request came after Gonzalez failed to appear three times to answer prosecutors’ questions as part of a criminal investigation into disputed election results.
Attorney General Tarek William Saab opened an investigation into Gonzalez after he and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado released what they said were the election results and posted them online. They indicate that Maduro lost to Gonzalez.
Gonzalez questioned the prosecutors’ actions as lacking due process and accused Saab, a longtime Maduro ally, of being under political pressure.
Let’s recall that the electoral commission loyal to the ruling party declared Nicolas Maduro the winner of the July 28 election a few hours after the polling stations closed. At the same time, no evidence was provided to confirm Maduro’s victory, as was done in previous presidential elections.
