On September 1, elections to local parliaments were held in two East German states.
Pro-Russian parties have gained 61.7% in the elections to the Thuringian state parliament. The local statistical office has published preliminary results: the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has received 32.8% of the votes, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) – 15.8%, and the Left Party – 13.1%. All of them are against supporting Ukraine, and are in favor of appeasing Russia and dialogue with Vladimir Putin.
The parties in the region now face lengthy negotiations to form a new governing coalition. None of them wants to form an alliance with AfD. An alliance between the CDU, BSW and the Left is possible, but they represent different ends of the political spectrum (right-wing conservatives and far-left).
Pro-Russian parties gained 46.9% in the local elections in Saxony. Here the results from the statistical office are as follows: the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) receives 30.6% of the votes, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) – 11.8%, the Left Party – 4.5%.
Now the parties of the region are facing lengthy negotiations on the formation of a new ruling coalition. None of them wants to enter into an alliance with the AfD. But they have already declared that they are open to dialogue with everyone, including the left-wing BSW. The previous coalition with the CDU, SPD and Greens is no longer possible.
On September 22, elections will be held in the state of Brandenburg.
