Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed that Kyiv must decide for itself how to conduct its military campaign.
Ukraine’s military operation in Russia’s Kursk region is legal and under Kyiv’s right to self-defense. This is what NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, Reuters news agency reports.
“Ukraine has the right to self-defense and according to international law, this right does not end at the border,” the secretary general said in an interview with the German weekly Welt am Sonntag.
He said that NATO was not notified in advance about Ukraine’s plans and did not play any role in them.
At the same time, Ukraine is taking risks by advancing into Russian territory, but Kyiv must decide for itself how to conduct its military campaign.
“President Zelensky clarified that the operation aims to create a buffer zone to prevent further Russian attacks on the border. Like all military operations, it is associated with risks. But it is Ukraine’s decision how to defend himself,” he explained.
Let’s remember that the UK’s permanent representative to the UN said that the UN Charter does not prohibit a country defending itself from armed aggression from “projecting force” on enemy territory if it is in accordance with international law.
