Ukraine returned 14 children and their families from the occupied territories.
The children and their parents were successfully taken out of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions. One of the families tried to leave the occupation on its own several times, but was returned back with threats and without explanation. Another family hid from the invaders because of its pro-Ukrainian position. This was reported on August 30 by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets on Telegram.
People told the ombudsman’s representatives that they were afraid to go out and could not find work without a passport during the occupation. The occupiers threatened to take away their property and deprive them of parental rights. And children had no right to choose schools. The Russians also burned Ukrainian books and confiscated valuable property. In addition, the homes of locals were constantly searched.
Lubinets noted that many of the returned children need placement in school, psychological and humanitarian assistance, and social integration.
Let us recall that in early August, Ukraine was able to return eight children from the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson region. Five girls and three boys aged six to 17 are already safe with their parents. The minors are receiving the necessary medical and psychological assistance.
