This tanker is carrying approximately 1 million barrels of crude oil. The Houthis first attacked it on August 21.
An oil tanker attacked by Yemen’s Houthis in the Red Sea last week has come under another attack. The Voice of America reported this on Friday, August 30.
The previous day, the Iran-backed Houthis published a video in which they planted explosives on the deck of the tanker Sounion, which is sailing in the Red Sea under the Greek flag. Explosions were heard on the ship. This could lead to an oil spill and cause irreversible damage to the coral reefs of the Red Sea.
However, EU naval forces in the region said they had not yet observed an oil spill from Sounion.
This tanker is carrying approximately 1 million barrels of crude oil. The Houthis first attacked it on August 21, using small arms, shells and an unmanned boat, causing a fire and leaving it without engines, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) office said.
The 25 crew were rescued by a French destroyer operating as part of the EU’s Red Sea operation and taken to Djibouti.
On Tuesday, a Pentagon spokesman said two tugboats had been sent to rescue the stricken vessel, but the Houthis threatened to attack them as well. On Wednesday, Arab media reported that the Houthis agreed to allow tugboats and rescue ships to reach the Greek tanker, “considering the humanitarian and environmental components.”
Earlier, the Houthis said they launched a ballistic missile and drone attack on the Lobivia container ship sailing under the Singaporean flag in the Gulf of Aden.
In this regard, the United States destroyed two Houthi ships in the Red Sea, which “posed a clear and present threat.”
