Poland has responded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request to transfer the MiG-29.
Warsaw will be able to transfer its MiG-29 multirole fighters to Kyiv only after receiving new combat aircraft to replace them. This was stated by Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, according to the Wiadomości publication.
According to the official, the Polish authorities have made a multi-billion dollar contribution to military aid to Ukraine and have done everything they could in this regard. However, the main priority now is to support their own defense capability and Kyiv should understand this.
Kosiniak-Kamysh noted that the decision to transfer the MIGs can only be made after Warsaw receives new combat aircraft. In particular, this concerns the F-35 fighters that Poland ordered from the United States. The delivery of these combat aircraft is not expected before 2026.
By that time, the MiG-29s in service with the Polish Armed Forces will be needed to protect its own airspace.
As is known, the day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he would like to obtain Poland’s consent to transfer the Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters of Soviet models. Zelensky said that Ukraine “really needs your MIGs.”
Recall that President Zelensky stated that the F-16 fighters that Ukraine received from Western partners took part in repelling a large-scale combined air attack by Russia yesterday, August 26, and destroyed Russian missiles and drones.
