The head of the Polish Ministry of Defense said he understood the Ukrainian president, but his country had “done everything it could for Ukraine.”
Poland may transfer its MiG-29s to Ukraine, as President Vladimir Zelensky has requested, only after it has a more modern replacement. This was said by Polish Minister of National Defense Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysh, the Wirtualna Polska portal reports.
The media recalled that at a press conference on Tuesday, August 27, Zelensky said that he wanted to get permission from Poland for the transfer of Soviet fighter models, including the MiG.
The head of the Polish Ministry of Defense said he understands the Ukrainian president, but Poland “makes decisions through the prism of its security,” and “has done everything it can for Ukraine.”
“I know that Ukraine needs a lot of weapons, but our partners in Ukraine must also understand that the Polish state must maintain its capabilities,” he added.
Regarding the transfer of the Polish MiG-29 to Ukraine, Kosiniak-Kamisz said that such decisions can only be made after strengthening the Polish Air Force with new aircraft – in particular, the F-35s ordered from in the United States.
“Only after receiving new aircraft will it be possible to dispose of old aircraft, such as the MiG-29, which are still used in particular for missions to protect Polish airspace Then we will make decisions,” concluded by Kosiniak-Kamisz.
