Brussels is concerned about the ruling Georgian Dream party’s proposal to ban “all opposition parties.”
European Commission foreign policy representative Peter Stano, in a commentary to Politico, said that the Georgian authorities’ plans to ban opposition parties, in particular United National Movementif they win the parliamentary elections in October, they will not remain without reaction from the West.
The EC representative noted that Brussels is concerned about the ruling party’s proposal Georgian dream ban “all opposition parties” because the latter are “essential to holding governments accountable and promoting democratic values.”
The current course of the Georgian authorities “endangers Georgia’s path to the EU, de facto leading to a halt in the accession process,” the official stressed.
“The European Commission is closely monitoring the rhetoric and developments in Georgia and is ready to respond accordingly, and we will act accordingly if these statements (about banning parties, -. ed.) will be implemented,” concluded Stano.
