The IAEA is concerned about military operations near a nuclear power plant in the Russian Federation, because the reactors there are old and do not have a protective dome.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi will lead a mission to visit the Kursk nuclear power plant in Russia on Tuesday. He announced this on the social network X on Monday, August 26.
“Due to the seriousness of the situation, I will personally lead the IAEA mission tomorrow to the Kursk nuclear power plant in Russia,” he wrote.
In a statement on the IAEA’s website, Grossi said that since the level of fighting around the Kursk nuclear power plant has increased, he is “closely monitoring” developments on the ground, especially regarding the plant.
“Again, I repeat that under no circumstances should it happen that a threat to their safety and security appears at the nuclear facilities. Events are developing rapidly, and it is very important for me tomorrow, when I arrive at the station, to personally see what is there that the situation is developing, and discuss the conditions for applying subsequent actions that may be necessary to assess the state of nuclear safety and security of the KNPP,” the statement said.
Grossi said last week that he plans to visit the Kursk nuclear power plant in Russia and Ukraine in the coming days. According to him, after visiting the nuclear power plant in the Kursk region, he will continue his trip to Kyiv, where he hopes to meet with President Vladimir Zelensky.
