In Nepal, a tourist bus fell into the Marsyangdi gorge and river in the central region of Tanahun. At least 27 people were killed. The tragedy was reported on Saturday, August 24, by The New York Times.
The bus loaded with tourists was traveling from the central-western Indian state of Maharashtra to Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, from Pokhara, a popular tourist destination. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
According to the police, 16 people were injured due to the accident. According to hospital reports, many of the victims are in serious condition. They were flown to Kathmandu by helicopter for treatment.
The rugged terrain is complicating rescue efforts, officials said. It took seven hours for emergency workers to lift the wounded and dead using ropes.
Nepal has long struggled with road safety in its challenging mountainous terrain. Roads are often narrow and much of the country remains inaccessible.
Last month, a landslide threw two buses into the Trishuli River, killing more than 60 people. From April 2022 to April 2023, more than 2,300 people died as a result of road traffic accidents.
It will be remembered that in July a plane crashed in Nepal with 19 people on board. The moment of the collapse was captured on video.
