The EU is discussing sending its military instructors to Ukraine.
Die Welt writes about this.
The final decision must be made no later than November 2024. Until now, Ukrainian military personnel have trained only in the EU, primarily in Germany and Poland.
Sending instructors to Ukraine is supported by France, Poland, Denmark, Sweden and the Baltic States. Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary and Malta are against it, fearing escalation.
However, the publication notes, Brussels did not directly recommend this option, but noted the need to create a coordination center in Kyiv and study the possibility of conducting exercises closer to the borders of Ukraine.
It is very likely that the EU military presence on Ukrainian soil will be perceived as a provocation. The fact that Russia can reach any point in Ukraine with its ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) creates a high level of threat to the deployed EU troops, the document, quoted by Die Welt, notes.
In addition, as Die Welt writes, the EU diplomatic service calls on member states to better adapt the EUMAM military training mission for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to the needs of Kyiv, but recommends not sending military instructors to the war-torn country.
The document says that the lack of Soviet-style equipment is one of the problems with the current EU exercises. In May, Kyiv asked the EU to hold part of the exercises on Ukrainian territory, but member states were divided on the issue.
In particular, concerns were expressed that in this case the EU could be drawn into the war, and given the air defense deficit, Ukraine would not be able to protect training areas from Russian attacks.
