On the Drina River, which flows along the border between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, a boat carrying migrants capsized on the night of August 22. Eight people were pulled from the water. This was announced by the head of the rescue team of the Office of Civil Protection of Republika Srpska, Vladan Rankic, as reported by Radio Liberty’s Balkan service.
According to him, the search for some other people, including the mother and daughter, is still ongoing.

According to the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs, of the 18 survivors, 16 were from Syria and two were from Egypt.
Over the past ten years, the Drina River has claimed the lives of at least 40 migrants trying to cross it, Radio Liberty reports. Serbia is part of the so-called Balkan route, through which migrants pass through to Western Europe. Last year, more than 100 thousand migrants passed through Serbia, which is 12% less than in 2022.
