President Vladimir Zelensky spoke on the phone with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. He reported this on Telegram on Wednesday, August 21.
In particular, he expressed gratitude to His Holiness for the prayers for the welfare of Ukraine and for the uninterrupted support of our people.
“We jointly positively assessed the progress of our cooperation, especially the recent productive visit of the Ukrainian delegation to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and expressed mutual expectations for the return visit of the Patriarchate,” Zelensky said.
The head of state also focused on the importance of the new law on spiritual freedom, supported by the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations, and emphasized that “an independent person must also be spiritually free.”
“I assure you that our state aims to strengthen Orthodoxy in Ukraine and promote open dialogue between churches,” Zelensky added.
We remind you that the Verkhovna Rada adopted a bill banning the activities of religious organizations associated with Russia in Ukraine.
