In recent months, Ukraine has seen an increase in the number of cases of infection with a new strain of coronavirus COVID-19, called FLiRT.
Thus, in the first half of August, more than 26 thousand people fell ill. This was stated on air by the Deputy Minister of Health, Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Ukraine Igor Kuzin on the national telethon.
In June, 2.3 thousand Ukrainians fell ill with COVID-19, in July, when the emergence of the strain began to be registered, almost 11.5 thousand, he noted. In the first half of August, more than 26 thousand patients have already been recorded.
Kuzin noted that the emergence of a new strain of COVID-19 in Ukraine was expected, but it led to an earlier increase in the incidence rate than predicted.
It is noted that a characteristic feature of FLiRT is its rapid spread, causing a wave-like incidence of the disease. And the course of the disease is classic for the entire subspecies “Omicron”.
It provides for a fairly mild course of the disease in people who have had a full course of vaccination, Kuzin emphasized.
According to him, Ukrainians over 60 years of age and those with concomitant non-communicable diseases have the highest risk of severe viral disease.
Kuzin noted that in Ukraine, the FLiRT strain is not characterized by an increased level of hospitalization: approximately 2.5 thousand patients with COVID-19 are being treated in clinics, 80% of whom are patients over 60 years old who have not been vaccinated in the last 12 months.
