The Ukrainian Armed Forces already control 92 settlements in the Kursk region of Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on August 19.
Today, our forces control more than 1,250 square kilometers of enemy territory and 92 populated areas. Our positions are being strengthened, certain areas are being stabilized, and the exchange fund is being replenished, Zelensky said at a meeting of the heads of Ukraine’s foreign diplomatic missions.
According to him, this operation was “our largest investment in the process of liberating Ukrainians from Russian captivity; this is one of our goals.”
In his opinion, if the partners had lifted the restrictions on long-range weapons, the Ukrainian Armed Forces would not have gone to Kursk region.
If the partners had lifted all the restrictions on range, then Ukraine would not have needed a physical event, in particular, in Kursk region, to protect Ukrainian citizens in the border areas and destroy the Russian potential for aggression, Zelensky said in Dnipro during a speech at a meeting of the heads of foreign diplomatic institutions of Ukraine “Military diplomacy: fortitude, weapons, victory.”
Other points from his speech:
- The event is slow in delivering weapons to Ukraine;
- Putin’s zero reaction proves that there is no reason not to give us permission to hit Russia with long-range weapons;
- The Kursk operation was the largest investment in the liberation of Ukrainians from captivity;
- Russia’s relations with regimes such as Pyongyang and Tehran pose a threat not only to Ukraine;
Zelensky said that after the attack on Russia, “the entire naive, illusory concept of the so-called red lines in relation to Russia, which reigned in the assessments of the war by some partners, fell apart the other day somewhere under the Judge.”
The world sees that everything in this war depends only on courage – our courage, the courage of our partners. On bold decisions for Ukraine, on courage in supporting Ukraine and bold steps and not only our steps. It is important that our partners are in sync with us in this determination, and then Russia will have no other step left except a just peace, the head of state believes.
Let us recall that The Economist reported on the exceptional secrecy of the operation in the Kursk region of Russia.
According to The Economist, in preparation for the operation in the Kursk region, the Ukrainian military leadership considered several options, namely: a strike in the Bryansk region, a strike in the Kursk region, a combined strike in two regions at once, or an even larger scale.
The article writes that the main goal of the deal was to draw troops away from Donbass and create advantages for the upcoming negotiations.
