Despite the statements about the “strategic partnership” between China and the Russian Federation and Putin’s trips to Beijing, the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline was never agreed with the leader of the PRC.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s project to increase gas supplies to China and build a new pipeline, Power of Siberia-2, has been paused for a long time. This was reported by The South China Morning Post on Monday, August 19.
It was further explained that Gazprom’s gas pipeline is not included in the national development plan until 2028 of Mongolia, the country through which the 2,500-kilometer pipeline should pass.
Russia offered Mongolia, in addition to transit revenues, to also receive gas from the pipeline. However, Moscow failed to reach an agreement with Beijing, said former Mongolian Security Council member Munkhnara Bayarlkhavga.
“As you can see, there is a long pause, because Moscow no longer believes that such a desired agreement with Beijing will be reached, and, most likely, this project will be postponed until better times,” said he.
In 2022, Putin proposed to Xi Jinping to increase Russian gas purchases to 100 billion cubic meters per year to replace the lost European market. However, despite statements about a “strategic partnership” without borders and Putin’s trips to Beijing, the construction was never agreed with the leader of the PRC.
We previously reported that the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline project, which is required to be a substitute for the lost European market for Russian Gazprom, is moving very slowly due to the position taken by China.
