Iran carried out a phishing attack against American politicians and officials.
About 10 people associated with the current US President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, including in the government and campaigns, were hit, according to a Google report.
So far, no outside company has confirmed the Trump campaign’s claim that it was targeted by Iranian hackers. The campaign has accused Iran-backed hackers of stealing sensitive documents and plotting to interfere in the election.
Google also said for the first time that Tehran attacked the Biden administration and his campaign headquarters.
It turns out that the cyberattack in May and June of this year was carried out by the Iranian government hacking team APT42, known for Charming Kitten and Mint Sandstorm, in May and June. The attackers attempted to hack personal email accounts associated with Biden, Trump, and Vice President Harris. The hackers embedded malicious links in the text of the emails or in PDF attachments, making them less likely to be detected.
Recall that Chinese hackers attacked the database of the British Ministry of Defense and were able to obtain mainly names and bank details. The attackers also learned the numbers of military bank accounts.
