Iran has targeted the Biden-Harris administration and related presidential campaigns in particular.
Iran has targeted about a dozen people linked to US President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump in a phishing attack. Axios reported this on Wednesday, August 14, citing Google’s June report.
The report is noted to be the first official to say that Iran is targeting, specifically, the Biden-Harris administration and related presidential campaigns.
Google said in its report that APT42, an Iranian government hacking group known as Charming Kitten and Mint Sandstorm, attacked about a dozen people in May and June. One of the attacks was against a high-ranking political consultant and was successful.
Google security researchers are still documenting attempts by APT42 to hack personal email accounts associated with Biden, Harris and Trump.
According to Axios, APT42’s techniques include embedding malicious links in both the body of emails and standard PDF attachments, making it difficult for users to detect.
Additionally, this group of hackers is known to contact victims on encrypted messaging platforms such as Signal and WhatsApp to create trust.
Recall that in 2020, hackers from Iran carried out a cyber attack on one of the US government websites and destroyed the public federal database of government documents.
