Two military air bases have been closed in the country due to possible poisoning of the drinking water.
Germany suspects Russia of sabotage at two German military bases where drinking water may have been poisoned. Bloomberg reported this on Wednesday, August 14, citing the head of the defense committee of the lower house of parliament in Berlin, Markus Faber.
“The next investigation will show whether my initial suspicions that Russia was behind it will be confirmed,” he said.
The politician also said that the investigation “strengthens suspicions” about an act of sabotage at the Cologne-Wan airbase, which is also used by members of the German government, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
On Wednesday, August 14, two German publications – Spigel and Süddeutsche Zeitung – reported that two military bases were closed in Germany due to possible sabotage of the facilities. In question are the Bundeswehr airbase Cologne-Wan, located near Cologne, and the NATO airfield in nearby Geilenkirchen. According to publications, unknown people can enter the territory of facilities and poison the water there.
Soon, this information was officially confirmed by the German military and NATO representatives. The North Atlantic Alliance emphasized that the attempt to penetrate the airport in Geilenkirchen was completely stopped, but because of the incident at the Cologne-Wan base, it was decided to organize a further examination of the water sources at the facility.
After the incident, the head of the parliamentary committee overseeing the German intelligence services, Konstantin von Notz, recalled that Russia in Europe was engaged not only in sabotage, but also in cybercrime, the purpose of which was to undermine aid to Ukraine and divide Western society.
It was previously reported that Germany was investigating possible sabotage against the Bundeswehr.
