In the territory where the Palestinians are seeking to create an independent state, Israel is planning to build its own settlement.

Israeli authorities have published a plan for a new settlement in the occupied West Bank. This was reported by Reuters, noting that in this way Tel Aviv raised the stakes a day before the planned peace negotiations in the Gaza Strip.

As Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said, this move is a response to the actions of the Palestinian leadership of the West Bank and the countries that recognize the Palestinian state.

“No anti-Israeli or anti-Zionist decision can stop settlement development. We will continue to fight against the dangerous idea of a Palestinian state. This is my life’s mission,” Smotrich said.

Most member states of the United Nations believe that the settlements built in the West Bank and other territories acquired by Israel in the 1967 Mideast War are illegal under international law. Israel is appealing, citing the Jews’ historical and biblical ties to the land.

Israel announced in June that it would legalize five outposts in the West Bank, create three new settlements and seize large swaths of land where Palestinians seek an independent state, further stoking Palestinian anger.

The Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited authority in the West Bank under Israeli military occupation, has reiterated that the construction of settlements and the demolition of Palestinian homes constitutes ethnic cleansing, something Israel denies. .

The new 60-hectare settlement, called Nahal Helets, will be part of the Gush Etzion settlement cluster and connect the region to nearby Jerusalem, said Smotrich, who heads a pro-settler party and is himself a settler.

Hamas has reportedly refused to negotiate with Israel. The group said it proposes to develop a plan for implementing the previously accepted proposal, rather than holding new negotiations.

Let’s remember that earlier the leaders of the United States, Egypt and Qatar in a joint statement called on Israel and Hamas to meet for immediate negotiations.
