Russian dictator Vladimir Putin sends his aide Alexei Dyumin to oversee the “Counter-Terrorist Operation” in Kursk region, where Ukrainian Defense Forces have occupied almost a thousand square kilometers in a week.
This was reported by Russian media on August 13.
Dyumin is almost 52 years old. He is originally from Kursk, although he lived there for only a few months. He has a military education, received in Voronezh.
Since 1996, he worked in the Federal Security Service, dealing with communications for the country’s top officials. He worked with then-Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin and several times with then-President Boris Yeltsin. He himself asked to transfer to personal security.
Dyumin called himself “Putin’s foot soldier” in an interview with journalists. He worked in his security for more than 10 years – from 1999 to 2012, with a year-long break when he was asked to lead Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov’s security in mid-2007.
In 2013, Dyumin began working in the Russian Armed Forces as deputy chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff. He also headed the command of the Special Operations Forces. Under his leadership, the SOF carried out the operation to occupy Crimea. In 2014, Putin awarded him the title Hero of Russia.
Dyumin is said to be the leader of the operation to flee former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to Russia from Crimea in February 2014. Dyumin himself denies this.
In 2015, he was deputy commander of the Ground Forces, then he was appointed deputy minister of defense, he was responsible for the construction of housing for the military. In 2016, he became governor of the Tula region and admitted that he did not expect this.
The media claim that Dyumin took part in negotiations with the owner of the Wagner PVK, Yevgeny Prigozhin, when he led the mutiny and marched on Moscow. The Russian publication Vazhnye Istorii claims that his relative Vladimir Mikheychik is close to the Wagner PVK.
In 2024, Dyumin became Putin’s assistant, and 10 days later, he became the secretary of the State Council, which coordinates the work and interaction of government bodies. The council includes the prime minister, the speakers of both houses of parliament, the head of the presidential administration, and all governors. Since then, Dyumin has often sat next to Putin. That’s why rumors have emerged that he could become Putin’s successor.
Relatives of Dyumin’s wife Olga live in Ukraine and after the full-scale invasion they hate Putin.
