Ukraine has begun receiving the first F-16 fighters from its allies. But the partners promised Ukraine more F-16 aircraft than they could train pilots and maintenance personnel.
Ukraine may invite retired Western F-16 pilots who want to fight for freedom, to fight on their side. This was said on Monday, August 12, by US Senator from the Republican Party Lindsey Graham at a briefing following negotiations with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kyiv.
“The Ukrainians will look to NATO countries for willing retired pilots to help them until they can train their own pilots,” he said.
According to the senator, Ukraine will be able to use the F-16 aircraft provided by partners earlier, while Ukrainian pilots will undergo appropriate training.
Graham added that he plans to raise the issue with the US upon his return.
“My belief is that we need to be fully committed. That’s what I want to see in 2024: I’m going to raise this issue. I’m asking President Biden, before he leaves office, to make sure this invitation is extended,” added Lindsey Graham .
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces showed how NATO instructors from Denmark teach Ukrainian pilots how to fly the F-16.
On August 4, Air Force Day of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Zelensky officially confirmed that the F-16 is already in Ukraine.
