Ukrainian forces are likely to be present in areas up to 35 kilometers in the Kursk region from the international border in the Sumy region.
The United States is in contact with Ukraine to “better understand the objectives and strategy of the operation in the Kursk region of Russia.” White House National Security Advisor John Kirby said this on Saturday, August 10, in a briefing.
Specifically, Kirby was asked whether the operation by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region went beyond what the United States has publicly authorized Ukraine to do. To which he responded that Ukraine should talk about its military operations, adding that Washington is contacting Kiev to “better understand what it is doing, what its goals are and if what is its strategy.”
“We’re in contact with our Ukrainian counterparts, and I’m going to hold off on identifying what’s going on on the ground until we feel like we have an idea of what the Ukrainians are doing,” Kirby explained.
He noted that the United States has not changed its approach to restrictions on the use of American weapons for strikes deep in Russia.
“Ukraine is using assets in an area that we previously said could be used with US weapons. The ultimate goal is to help Ukraine defend itself,” Kirby said.
Earlier, Zelensky announced the “transfer of war” to the territory and the Russian Federation noted the Ukrainian units that are effectively defending the country from the invaders.
