A potential map of the operation in the Kursk region was published on the evening of August 8 by Radio Liberty and Babel.
Let us recall that on the night of August 6, the Ukrainian Armed Forces entered Russian territory in the area of the city of Sudzha (population about five thousand people) in the Kursk region.
By the evening of August 7, they had advanced deep into the territory, bypassing Sudzha in two directions – north-east and south-east. The Ukrainian Armed Forces captured the border checkpoint and the gas measuring station (located several hundred meters behind it), and captured about 40 Russians.
The scale of the operation and the number of Ukrainian forces are unknown. Russian leading Telegram channels and analysts put forward several versions of the operation plan. The most conservative of them is that the Ukrainian Armed Forces plan to tie down the reserves of the Russian Forces Group “North” operating in the Kharkov direction.
Babel also shows on the map what is known about the Ukrainian Armed Forces operation on the afternoon of August 8 from open sources – messages from Osinter, Russian pro-war telegram channels and telegram channels from settlements in the Kursk region.
This data appears with a delay, the current situation differs from that shown on the map.
In addition, heavy fighting near the town of Sudzha, through which Russian gas flows to Ukraine, has raised concerns about the sudden halt of transit flows through Ukraine before the end of a five-year agreement with Russia’s Gazprom.
The Ukrainian gas transit route allows Russia to export gas to Europe via Ukraine. The transit agreement expires at the end of the year. Kyiv has previously said it has no plans to renew or continue it.
After information emerged that Russia apparently did not control the station, gas prices in Europe rose by about 5%, according to data from specialized companies.
