Yunus’ appointment follows the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after weeks of mass protests in the country.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in on August 8 as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. Euronews reported this.
It was noted that the country’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin swore in Yunus and other members of the new interim government at the presidential palace in Dhaka, where foreign diplomats, politicians, members of civil society and top businessmen were also present.
Yunus reportedly returned to Bangladesh from a trip abroad on Thursday. He was received at the Dhaka International Airport by the Commander-in-Chief of the country’s armed forces, General Waqer-Uz-Zaman, and the chiefs of the country’s navy and air force.
Yunus’ appointment follows the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after weeks of mass protests in the country. As is known, Yunus has been a long-time opponent of Hasina, and his appointment as interim head of government was proposed by the student protesters.
It was earlier reported that in Bangladesh, against the backdrop of mass protests and the resignation and flight from the country of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasin, the army commander announced the formation of an interim government.
